Ubuntu Versus Fedora Core 4
I use Fedora Core 4 at work and have had occassional problems upgrading it on my work linux box. Right now I am able to run the latest Linux kernel on it but every once in a while the latest Kernel refuses to boot and I’m stuck using an earlier release. At least with Linux I can always boot to an older release without any problem. At home, I use Ubuntu on my laptop. The one drawback on Ubuntu is that there’s not a ton of updates from release to release but it is very stable. Releases occur every six months with security fixes released on an as needed basis. There’s also the ability to add some additional programs through an extra distribution. My only complaint thus far is that I won’t be able run Firefox 1.5 until the next release of Ubuntu which is due in April. My other compaint about Ubuntu is that it defaults to a user having to use the “sudo” command anytime a super user function needs to be done. Thankfully, it is easy to reset the super user password and avoid the use of “sudo”.
