RAL – Read At Leisure

I’m pretty good about filtering my e-mail but last week it dawned on me that I get a lot of e-mail that isn’t really part of any action item. It’s just techie stuff such as articles and links to blogs that I should only read when I get a free moment. I created a new folder in Outlook called RAL or Read At Leisure. I generally read tech magazines in groups (and by read I mean skim) and now I’m doing the same to my tech e-mail. Much more efficient.

Riding tonight

I think the rain has finally ended. I’m not under the weather. I should be able to get a ride in tonight.

Sick

I was sick on Thursday and now it looks like rain.I think we’ll go out for dinner tonight and I’ll try and ride tomorrow morning. The weather report for tomorrow isn’t very promising. In other news I’m still loving my 1950’s Gillette Superspeed double razor. It’s so nice to spend a couple of bucks on blades every month or two rather than every week.

43 Miles On Sunday

Had a nice ride on Sunday of 43 miles. Ended up out near Batavia before making the decision to ride back home. I told my wife I would be back in time for lunch and had I taken the long way home I would have been close to 60 miles but would have been late. As it was I was gone three hours.I rode a combination of roads and bike paths. As always I made much better time on the roads.Last night I started to put together a bike for my brother Brad. It’s an early 80’s Miyata that I had picked up for parts. Now I’m putting new stuff on it so he can use it. It’s not going to be the lightest of bikes but it will run well.

Working on a porch

Had the day off work today. Got to read up on the warrentless wiretaps being found against the law. Hopefully that will hold up on appeal.Worked on my porch during the afternoon. Had to go to two Home Depot stores since the one closest to me couldn’t cut the lumber I needed since their saws were broken. Thankfully another Home Depot is only ten minutes away.Tomorrow I will finish this phase of the project which involved replacing two support posts and most of the support beams on the landing area. Tomorrow’s work will involve reinstalling the planks that you walk on (some planks can be re-used but I’ll have to cut two or three new ones). I’ll probably pull some more nails from some of the other planks and secure them with deck screws.I tweaked my achilles tendon on my left leg. I’ll try and get a ride in tomorrow if the thunderstorms hold off.

10.77 miles

Worked mainly on increasing my cadence tonight. Rode 10.77 miles with a 17.0 mph average. I caught and passed Conalgo guy again. He’s not the most friendly of guys when he’s getting passed. I can tell my legs are starting to come around because I didn’t bother getting out of the saddle on a short climb when I was behind him in spite of the fact that he got out of his. I really didn’t have a need to do so as I was still closing and I didn’t want to look like a jerk. It’s not like we were racing and I have no idea how far he had ridden. My legs felt a little empty by the end of the ride in that they didn’t have much push left in them. I was able to spin up the last hill at a good rate and decent speed.

No pinch flats

I rode 20 miles last night and have now gone about 26 miles without a pinch flat. What a change. With my next ride I’ll be over 500 miles for the year. I should be able to get close to a thousand before the weather changes to snow.

Riding with your wife

Some time ago I purchased for my wife a vintage Peugot PX-10. This bike is a vintage 10 speed racing bike. It has a straight block set of rear cogs. Not necessarily the perfect ride for her but considering how little she goes out it works. We took a ride this weekend together and while the pace was pretty slow we still managed to do over six miles. After the ride I was informed that she wanted a new seat (she needs a women’s seat and the present seat isn’t really a good fit) and I suggested a six or seven speed rear with some a more friendly range. She thought that sounded like spending money and told me the gears were fine. I’ll probably still replace the wheels. All in all a nice fun ride. Slow and easy for me and not too bad for her.

Pinch Flat

Put on a set of Forte Titan’s and managed to pinch the tube on the rear. It let go about a half mile from the house. The new front rim is about 200 grams lighter than the old one. The bike feels much lighter than when I first got it.

Two Quick Comments

One – Worst version of Cats In The Cradle – John Davidson

Two – Has Barry Manilow had enough plastic surgery yet? He’s 60 but looks like Joan Rivers in her 70’s. Way too tight skin. What ever happened to growing old gracefully?
