Ubuntu Linux – A Follow Up Post

I’ve been enjoying Ubuntu Linux on my laptop for quite some time now and thought I would pass that along. It’s a seriously stable platform and the update system blows away what Microsoft offers. It’s also nice to be able to apply most updates without having to reboot.  Adding software packages needs a little more work to make it easy for a totally computer ignorant person but overall it’s pretty straight forward.

Browsing Shortcut

A fast way to type in new web addresses is to enter the domain name only and then press Ctrl + Enter. Those two keys will automatically fill in the http://www. and .com.

WordStar

I used WordStart the first couple of years I was in college. I typed many a paper into it and to this day remember how to bold and underline. Later, we moved on to WordPerfect 5.1 and by my senior year I discovered the joy of Macs. I still have a soft spot for old DOS apps.Eweek listed 25 more top technologies from the last 25 years and WordStar made the list. Their comment was very funny and very true. – “The mass-market archetype of a user interface so horrible, people learned it and never forgot it”.

More Miles Davis

I’m still working my way through Miles The Autobiography. It’s a very interesting read.Listened to some Coltrane during dinner. I love the way Coltrane wrote and the thoughts but I find his tone to be thin and boring.Did a family wedding this weekend. Stayed at a nice hotel. The beds had a foam mattress. Very comfortable.

Main Inbox Empty

As of this moment, my main inbox at work is empty! I love using the RAL folder (read at leisure) for sorting things that aren’t important. I thought I might even consider setting that folder up to automatically delete items after a certain amount of days. The inbox is my main collection bin for information that needs to be dealt with in some fashion.I’m celebrating that it is empty!!!!!

Miles Davis

I finished the Quincy Troupe book “Miles and Me” and picked up at the bookstore “The Autobiography” by Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe. Quincy’s book was a great primer for reading “The Autobiography”. The language is colorful and the style of the book is more spoken word than written word. It brings to life the feeling of hearing Miles speak and express himself.I’ve found a wonderful quote out of the book.Knowledge is freedom and ignorance is slavery. He used it in the context of exploring the great works of people like Stravinsky and Berg but it applies to much more.

Used and Rare

I found the book “Used and Rare” to be a nice read.  Well written with good pacing.  The weaving of the story and the narrative was well done.  It wasn’t quite as interesting or intense as the Nicholas Basbanes books (I highly recomend A Gentle Madness) but might serve as a better introduction to why people collect books.

Used and Rare

I’m reading “Used and Rare” by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone. It is a very interesting book that chronicles their immersion into the world of book collecting.

Still didn’t make it on the bike

Between the weather and finishing Project Porch I have yet to make it on my bike.  Project Porch is basically done. That means that everything I set out to do this year is done. My wife wants me to change out the rest of the railings which I have to look into doing.I finished off some writing projects this weekend and now have to work on transcribing a couple of two hour interviews. I’m also working on my Jazz Project.

Knee Pain – Gone!

I played tennis last night and had no knee pain. I’ll be on the bike as soon as possible if the weather isn’t too bad this weekend.I also found a great way to get my 4 1/2 year old son to improve his ability at tennis. After watching him spray the ball all over the place for about 15 minutes I told him that every time he hit daddy with the ball he would get a quarter! Rapid progress ensued. Thankfully tennis balls are soft and he can’t hit it that hard.
