Always have a capture device with you

Yesterday I was without a capture device while having a quick conversation with my old boss (who’s transitioning to a special project).  We started to have a conversation about certain projects that weren’t previously captured and I realized that I didn’t have my pocket pc or any paper.  Thankfully my desk is close and I grabbed what I needed so that we could capture these items.  Today I have a small Moleskine in the pocket for just these moments.

Bertrand Russel Quote

Bertrand Russel was one of the great minds of the 20th century.  Here’s a quote of his that illustrates an interesting point:

“The trouble with this world is that the foolish are cock-sure, and the intelligent are full of doubt”.

KFC getting rid of trans-fat oil

I like to eat as healthy as possible at lunch but will admit a weak spot for KFC. Their BBQ Chicken sandwich is low in fat and as fast food goes a decent choice. I do get the potato wedges along with it. Anyways, it seems that come April if I have a weak moment and order anything fried from KFC I will no longer get a dose of trans-fats.

Benny Goodman Plays Charlie Parker

Benny Goodman was an amazing player and is probably a little overlooked these days. Here’s a clip at youtube of Benny playing Ornithology by Charlie Parker. His explanation of the tune give the greatest example of how music moved from Swing to Bop.

7 Ways to Leave the Office Earlier

Laura Stack of “The Productivity Pro” has an interesting article that she wrote for Microsoft about seven ways to leave the office earlier. I really like the common sense of her suggestion that you don’t schedule late meetings. The end of the day is about collecting any loose papers and making sure that everything is being tracked for me.

The article can be found here: http://theproductivitypro.typepad.com/the_productivity_pro/2006/10/microsoft_at_wo.html

Hey this looks different

I spent the morning moving the blog to wordpress after spending the last couple of years in e107. There’s not a direct import so I had to manually move the old posts via a series of small RSS feeds. I also had to move the content pages. More work to come but now I’m off to a halloween party.

Read At Leisure Hack Further Explained

Previously I mentioned my Read At Leisure (RAL) group in Outlook. Once of the further hacks I’ve made is that I only keep one week worth of emails in this folder. I have set up the folder to archive every day and to delete anything older than seven days. The information in this folder is typically a what is going on now in technology so having a short amount of time for retention is fine.

Writing Stuff Down

From the time I was a small child I had the need to write stuff down. I remember being eight years old and my mom gave me a small notebook that I was to use to write down assignments from school. I lost it in short order! It wasn’t until the last year or so that I pulled out my old Franklin Planner and started to make an effort to capture all of my stuff. As I’ve mentioned before the book Getting Things Done has been a great help to getting me in touch with the “how to”.Along the way, I have come to the comclusion that even though you may have the “capture habit” down pat there’s still going to be stuff that doesn’t get captured. Why is this? I think it comes down to the fact that there’s always something floating around in our heads during moments when paper or a cell phone or some other capture device isn’t present. There’s also a lot of stuff that is initially dismissed when you think about it the first time but keeps coming back in to your mind. These items should be captured. Maybe they need to be put onto a Someday/Maybe list. In spite of the fact that I still can’t capture everything I’m sure my mother would be proud of me for taking her advice after all these years.
