Using Wordpress for CMS

I’ve got a new site in mind and I’m thinking about using Wordpress as a CMS solution.  The editing features are pretty straightforward and the layout tools are top notch.

Carbonite might be a winner

I am really liking the way the carbonite service works.  I think I’m going to sign up for their regular product.  The software is unobtrusive.  I would like it to backup on every file change instead of once a day . . . maybe that’s a configuration thing.  Otherwise, I am really impressed with carbonite for online backups.

Tom Tom GPS

Made the jump into the car GPS market tonight. Apparently this is the hot gift of the holiday season. I have a Garmin GPS that connects to my laptop which then uses dedicated software. I’ve used that set up for the last few years with decent results but it was mostly limited to trips. I also had to plug the laptop into a special connector I have and there was a big tangle of wires to deal with. This should be much cleaner and it will end up in my wife’s car.

What I liked about the Tom Tom unit over the Garmin units of about the same price was that I am no longer stuck buying updated maps at $80.00 per year from Garmin.  At three or four years of expected life out of the product I figure I’ll easily be ahead.

Two Shave With Derby Blade

Well I am two blades into the grand Derby double edge blade experiment and the results today were much better than day one. I switched over to my trusty Gillette Tech razor and things went much better. The Derby’s are noticeably sharper than the Israeli Personas I had been using.  That was a bit of a surprise to me.  Of course, the Israeli Personas were much sharper than the American Personas.

Shaved with a Derby blade today

Ordered some Derby blades from eBay the other day because the Persona’s that I have are just not working that well for me anymore.  The Derby’s seem to be a big improvement.  They’re a little shaper than the Persona’s I have and more comfortable.  I did manage to nick my self up a bit so I’ll have to set the adjustable razor a little less open.

Convergence and Collaboration

I have seen a number of articles and news reports about the 20 something generation.  They’re called the millennium generation.  They have grown up in sports leagues that don’t have anything but winners and by most accounts they’ve been pampered by overly protective parents.  I’m sure this doesn’t apply to every single person of a generation.  What is different about this generation is that they listen to their iPod’s, text on their cell phones, and use the computer – all at the same time.

For a long time I’ve seen the coming age of convergence.  TV, radio, Internet, e-mail, phone, and other media all coming into one source.  We’re not quite there yet but as I type this blog entry I have a music service streaming audio, an IM client running, and if I wanted a skype phone handy.  E-mails going as well.

The next jump in technology is upon us.  Look at the iPhone and all the other phones that play mp3’s.  Windows Mobile and Palm based phones are finally becoming more popular even if my carrier doesn’t support them yet.  The only missing piece of this puzzle is wi-fi everywhere and even that is happening.

The future focus has changed though.  Instead of convergence being the end goal we are now looking at how convergence and collaboration fit together on one device.  That’s the new holy grail of technology that one of the folks of the millennium generation will be bringing to a device (let’s not call it a computer, phone, palm, or anything else) that will be in your hands in the next five to ten years.

Dan Fogelberg Dead at 56

Sad news came across the wire last night.

This age thing is funny.  When did Dan Fogelberg get to be 56 and when did I stop being 25?

GTD Fast

Every quarter I have a recurring calendar item that comes up and reminds me to re-listen to my GTD audio CD.  This quarter I am re-listening to GTD Fast – the hard to find but quite excellent CD of an actual seminar.

I’m still toying with the idea of signing up for GTD Connect but I doubt it would be worth the monthly fee.

Online Backup Made Easy?

I’ve been playing with the online backup service xdrive.com over the last week or so.  I uninstalled it last night due to a completelog.txt file growning to 15 GB.  Not cool and their support didn’t have any information on how to fix that situation.  Now I’m working with carbonite.  Two week free trial.  We’ll see how it works.  I thought their software was better than xdrive.com and that their performance was better.

Eating Healthy at Fast Food Places

I’ve talked about this before but it is quite difficult to eat healthy at fast food places.  KFC and Taco Bell are actually two of the easiest places to eat.  Arby’s has very few low fat choices.  McDonald’s and Wendy’s both carry grilled chicken sandwiches that can be ordered plain so that they don’t have the calorie and fat laden sauce.  Burger King offers a pretty tasty veggie burger.  Subway offers more choices than just about anywhere else.
